Make New Year's Resolutions Obsolete
Now that we are smack dab in the middle of the year, it has me thinking about New Year's resolutions. I vote for moving that annual custom from January to July - and this is why:
At the end of the holiday season, most of us are stressed, fatigued, and not feeling our best. We are out of our typical routines, and overindulgence has caught up with us. For some reason, we pick this as the right time to make big promises to ourselves. These promises typically get made with little thought, and our commitment fades after several weeks. Then we berate ourselves for failing and wait another ten months to do it all over again. It doesn’t make any sense!
Another trap many fall into with New Year's resolutions is the quick-fix illusion. Quick fixes are temporary. Digging into the core of limiting habits & establishing new layers of growth does not happen in a 21-day challenge, my friend. Lasting change takes a plan, consistency, resilience, and time. Months. Years even. Certainly not days.
Making these promises to yourself mid-year means you can start when you are in a positive mindset and in the midst of a more regular routine. It allows you space for self-reflection and to craft a plan. You can thoughtfully set achievable targets and goals and experiment with tools to find those that best help you get back up when you fall. It gives you room to take consistent action and form new habits over time. It means you have months to practice before the high-stress holiday season arrives!
Long-lasting, transformational change takes time. Why not start now? Seeds planted this month can be beautiful blossoms in six months! Picture how far you can travel and the experience you will gain. Imagine the momentum that will carry you into the new year feeling calm and confident.
