5 Tips for Successful Wellness Goal Setting

1- Make your goals SMART:

Specific- What is the exact action you will take? Think who, what, where.

Measurable- How will you track your progress? Think how much or how many.

Attainable- Make it realistic! A small personal stretch is better than a big one

Relevant- Make it matter. Why is it important to you?

Time-Bound- Set a target completion date. How long will you do this for?

2- Work back from where you want to end up.

Knowing your destination, or a longer term vision, will provide focus along the way. Short-term goals that move you toward your long-term vision build confidence and momentum as you achieve them. Personally, I like to start with where I want to be in a year and then set monthly goals to get me there.

3- Expect and embrace failure.

You will falter. Know this when you begin and have a plan for when it happens. If you anticipate the obstacles you may encounter and decide how you will handle them when you do, you’ll be able to get back on track more quickly. The important thing is to be kind to yourself when you stumble, let it go, and start again tomorrow. Remember, the pursuit of wellness is a lifelong journey!

4- Celebrate and appreciate success.

Success comes in packages of all sizes. When you complete a goal action, give yourself a pat on the back or do a victory dance. Finding joy in the journey will help you stick to it! Plan regular check-ins to reflect on the changes you are experiencing and how you are moving toward your long-term vision. Recognize how your thoughts and feelings have evolved from when you started. It’s a big deal!

5- Put your goals on the calendar, be flexible, and have FUN along the way!

Scheduling your goals & receiving reminders gives you prompts to follow through. Be flexible as you review your progress. If you need to make changes or shift a priority, go ahead! This is YOUR journey- have fun with it!
