It takes practice to feel balanced

Balance is not something we achieve or an item on a to-do list. Balance is something we seek, and it takes practice to find it!

For me, it is helpful to view 'balance' as a journey rather than a destination. It helps me remember that how I define balance in my life today is A LOT different than it was 25 years ago, or five years ago, or even five months ago! It allows me to reflect without judgment and let go of things no longer at the top of my 'important' list. It reminds me that the more I practice seeking balance, the better I am at finding my way there.

Use these 7-steps to find balance:

  • Reflect on what is most important to you - it is helpful to put these in writing

  • Set priorities and boundaries accordingly - practice saying no & block out time on your calendar for these most important things

  • Notice the triggers that upset your balance - what makes you feel overwhelmed, angry, stressed, or anxious?

  • Decide how to manage those triggers - ask for help? end a toxic relationship? shorten your daily task list? teach a coworker or child a skill? remove temptations from your environment?

  • Recognize when you feel balanced - think about the actions you took to get there

  • Be grateful for those moments! - take time to appreciate how balance makes you feel

  • Understand balance is personal and fluid - balance is different for each person & will ebb and flow throughout life

Go easy on yourself. You won’t feel ‘balanced’ 100% of the time. BUT having awareness of what true balance feels like increases the probability of you achieving it more frequently. Most importantly, never forget that YOU are responsible for creating balance in your life.

Go ahead: develop the skill of saying ‘no’, be mindful of how you spend your time, and find yourself feeling aligned and truly happy. You’re worth it!
