How do you deal?

I’m gonna be real here: Until recently, meditation has always seemed too ‘out-there’ for me. I have a hard time quieting my mind, so I didn’t think I could successfully meditate. Then I read a snippet about athletes using visualization/meditation during their training. WHAT??!! (cue mind-blown emojis!)

I was a competitive gymnast growing up and through college. Visualization was a daily practice once I reached a certain level. Affirmations were key to competing confidently. These were valuable tools then and I still use them now. I had no idea what I’ve been doing all these years is my own special brand of meditation!

I haven’t had gymnastics skills or routines to visualize in years, so I now use a chosen ‘happy place’ instead. I have many happy place options (this sunset above the clouds is one of them!) and change them up frequently. I don’t set aside time to meditate per se, but I do take 15-minutes when I’m feeling overwhelmed or finding it difficult to stay focused. Here’s what works for me:

When I feel overwhelmed I:

  • play calming instrumental music or nature sounds

  • add scent to the room with essential oils or a candle - incense is also an option

  • close my eyes, visualize my happy place, and breathe slowly

  • repeat a positive affirmation to replace any negative self-talk and keep my mind from wandering

  • recognize there are things I can control - identify the next step, take action, and celebrate!

When I can’t stay focused I:

  • change my current environment and move for 5-10 minutes

  • eat a snack including fruits &/or veggies

  • close my eyes, visualize my happy place, and breathe slowly

  • repeat a positive affirmation to replace any negative self-talk and keep my mind from wandering

  • recognize I can be focused and productive - identify the next step, take action, and celebrate!

My point is this: Call it what you like. Use what feels right to you. Spend a few breaths, minutes, or hours. You do you. Take a small bite that seems digestible. Let it evolve. Stick with what works or leave it if it doesn’t. THERE ISN’T A RIGHT OR WRONG WAY!! Whew- what a relief!

Save this post if you want to revisit, or share it if it resonates with you. Please tell me how you deal when you’re overwhelmed or can’t focus. I’d love to know!
